Topspot Country Cookin' started as a hot dog stand in the corner of a laundromat. Janet and Jack Edens built a much needed laundromat in the Sissonville,WV community in 1987. Janet's love and skill for cooking, the desire to make extra money and knowing the customer had time to kill while doing laundry prompted the Edens' to build one corner into a small soup and sandwich deli. Every day it got busier and busier. Friends and family were hired and we grew and grew.
In 1990, Topspot added a 40' kitchen and a room that seated 125. In 1992 and 1993, Topspot's Chicken & Dumplings won top honors as the People's Choice Award in Charleston,WV at The Taste of Charleston. The little restaurant in Sissonville, WV continued to grow. In 2000, Topspot once again had to add an additional 2300 sq. ft. to our building to meet the demands of our dining room and catering business.
The highlight of our career has been the two calls from Washington, DC informing us Topspot had been selected to serve the President, his Secret Service and national media during two different trips to Charleston and Ripley, WV.
Janet modestly boasts of Topspot's growth and success but attributes it to her wonderful staff of 25, most of who have been with Topspot since the beginning. Janet and Jack say "Thank You" to the staff which she calls her family, the many customers and the media who found an interesting and inspiring story in a small town restaurant. Most of all, thanks to God who gave us good health, the perserverance and stamina needed to be there seven days a week.
Janet works everyday to develop and improve her recipes to make healthier foods as "Made from scratch" are tastier and much healthier. We use no animal fat to flavor our foods. We invite you to take a look at our menus and come on over. If we don't have the food you're looking for, just ask us.
The West Virginia Division of Tourism and the Collaborative for the 21st Century Appalachia partnered to identify some of the best “can’t miss” eateries across the state. We are honored to be included as one of the 101 unique places to dine in West Virginia. The announcement describes our restaurant as follows:
"If country cooking is what you’re looking for, then head to Top Spot in Sissonville. Award-winning chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, baked steak, fried chicken and cornbread are all on the menu. The waitresses are very friendly, courteous and considerate and will accommodate changes in orders without question."
